A Short History of Bass High School
1959-2009

Bass High School named after the famous explorer, George Bass, opened its doors in January 1959 as Bass Hill High and became Bass High in March 1959 with a student population of 440 students.
The school as it is known today was built in stages, with the first stage erected for the cost of 170,000 pounds, which included a Home Economics block, a manual arts sections, laboratories and general purpose class rooms.
The second stage of building involved the creation of more general-purpose classrooms, laboratories and an administrative block. 1967 was a big year for Bass High School as the new Assembly Hall was opened for use. The school library in its current location began construction in March 1975 and was completed in 1976. The school has seen continued improvements throughout its 50-year history with the opening of the Agricultural Farm in 1985, a Support Unit in 1998 and a Learning Centre for students in the library.
The Principal at the time of the school’s opening was Mr. P A Carnegie who served until 1963. Successive Principals have included Mr J R Harrison 1964-68, Mr A H Harris 1969-74, Mr N R Ironmonger 1975-79, Mrs C Preece 1980-83, Mr S Murtough 1984-85, Mr F Yardley 1985-87, Mr P Goodacre 1988-01 and the current Principal Mr A Djukic who has served since 2002.
