Student Support Programs

A.M Program: Awareness Motivation program aimed at mentoring and monitoring at risk students on a daily basis to encourage positive behaviour. The program runs in the Learning Centre and is coordinated by the S.O.S and ISTB every period 1. Targeted for students in Yrs 7 – 9

Links To Learning: Arab Council of Australia runs a creative and practical learning program for young Arabic students thinking of leaving school early. Learning projects assist these young people to remain in education. Targets students in Yrs 9 and 10.

Youth Pathways: A federal Government program designed to assist students at risk of leaving school early. It is for students aged from 13 – 19. The program is aimed to assist students make a successful transition to year 12 and ultimately to further education, training or employment. A Youth Pathways Counsellor is stationed at our school three days per week in the Learning Centre.

Reconnect (Mission Australia): A federal government program aimed at reconnecting young people with their families and their community. Reconnect works to intervene in situations where conflict issues at home could lead to, or have resulted in, a young person leaving home and becoming homeless. For students of any age.

TAFE Coordinated Pathways (DET): The Coordinated Pathways TAFE ‘taster’ project aims at re-engaging young people at risk of disengaging from education. This is achieved through the implementation of coordinated training programs, case work and support services that will improve employment and education outcomes for these young people. Targeted students are 15yrs and over.

Streetworx: “Making the Cut Program” designed for high-risk students and its aim is to get students ‘out of the rough’ and back onto the fairway of life. It promotes trust, life skills, promotes self-esteem and redirects students at high-risk from crime and anti social behaviour. It is targeted at both boys and girls from Yrs 7 – 9.

GOALS: This program involves one-on-one mentoring between school students and mentors from the corporate world. It is available for students who are possibly at risk of not reaching full potential at school for various reasons. Students who may apply to apply may be those who are considering leaving school early, or students who have excellent educational potential but unrealised ability within themselves. The program broadens the experiences and understanding of students and mentors alike, and offers opportunities to meet a more extensive group of students and business people. The program endeavors to be mutually beneficial to students and mentors. Students are selected at the beginning of Yr 9 for this program.

AIME: Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience Program involves the mentoring of Indigenous Australian High School students by volunteer Indigenous and Non-Indigenous university student Mentors, through a series of structured workshops and one-on-one mentoring sessions.

Peer Support: Senior students from year 10 become older friends to a small group of year 7 students as they enter High School. Through their involvement in the Peer Support group – sharing, discussing and participating in activities together – the year 7 students are more likely to integrate easily into the school, building friendships with students other than those in their classes and with an older friend in the wider school community. The Peer Support program at Bass involves all year 7 students in term 1.

Sister to Sister Program: Is a 12 month mentoring and personal development program. Every Little Sister in the program is assigned a Big Sister who is a role model to supply support and guidance. It is available for teenage Girls who are at risk of not completing their education.

Future Focus: Is a ‘Links To Learning’ program funded by the Department of Education and Training. The target group is students in Yrs 7,8 and 9 who are experiencing difficulty coping in the school system and are at risk of leaving school early.

Peer Mentoring: Is a one on one program where senior students in Yr 10 are linked with an identified risk Yr 7 student to assist them in their transition from primary school to high school.

Peer Tutoring: Is a literacy program where Yr 9 students are trained to assist Yr 7 students develop their reading and literacy skills.
